Director of Programmes

Closing date: 22 March 2024, 00:00 GMT

Salary: £75,000 - £85,000 per annum

Vacancy type: Permanent, full time

Global Canopy is a data-driven not for profit delivering real transparency and accountability for market impacts on nature and people. Our special focus is on ending deforestation – an essential step in achieving urgent global goals on climate, nature and human rights. We are pleased to be working with Oxford HR on this search for our new Director of Programmes.

About the role

As Director of Programmes you will play a pivotal role for the organisation: stewarding, connecting and growing our amazing portfolio of programmes, and helping to ensure that we maximise our positive impact.

You will oversee and report on programmatic strategy development and delivery, ensuring quality and resourcing for a talented and effective group of directors. You will ensure the alignment of programmatic work with our strategy, and help create synergies in delivering for impact. You will oversee annual planning, alongside monitoring, evaluation and learning processes.

You will lead on gatekeeping and development for new programmatic activities aligned with our strategy and support programmatic fundraising. Your role will ensure that programme directors are on track with their plans, are adequately resourced and that progress is reported back to the leadership team.

You will line manage Programme Directors and cross-cutting Technical Leads across the team, and chair our Programmatic Leadership Group. You will convene and connect (rather than direct) the activities of teams, facilitating rich dialogue between teams, providing capacity (as requested) and helping the programme team to get to the key decisions required for success. Global Canopy’s style of management is to be ‘first amongst equals’.

You will report to the Executive Director, and be a member of Global Canopy’s Leadership Team, helping to develop an impact mindset across the organisation as it continues to grow. You will be a champion of our values, will be deeply committed to our charitable mission, and will ensure that diversity, equity and inclusion are central to our programmatic work.

To be successful in this role, these are the personal attributes we think are key:

  • Motivated to work in an organisation that is purpose-led and with a deep commitment to the values and mission of Global Canopy.
  • A high degree of emotional intelligence and an instinctive understanding of how to empower teams and people.
  • Kind, collaborative and humble in approach.
  • Organised, decisive and creative.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset and approach, with a desire to test new ideas quickly with the market, to harvest feedback and adjust accordingly to grow new work streams.
  • Prepared to be both hands-on and strategic, taking ownership for new work streams and overseeing delivery of work while extra capacity is being brought in.
  • Enjoy being creative with work, drawing on experience in learning design to find different and innovative ways to explain complex topics and ideas.
