International Forest Risk Model

International Forest Risk Model

INFORM is a decision-support platform that aims to help private and public institutions across sectors worldwide to reduce deforestation risks associated with their supply chains and investments.

Over 70% of tropical deforestation in the last decade has been driven by agricultural expansion to produce a small number of globally-traded commodities. This is responsible for some 15% of global carbon emissions, destroys precious ecosystems that underpin regional water, food, and energy security, and is harmful to the rights and livelihoods of local people. Whether organisations source materials from destructive supply chains knowingly or unknowingly, they expose themselves to legal, operational, and reputational risks. Lack of transparency in supply chains is the major barrier to mitigating such risks.

Using criteria-based assessments and probability calculations, INFORM will assess whether a product is linked to deforestation. Users will be provided with a simple risk assessment related to their procurement or investment, as well as guidance on how to reduce business risk. INFORM aims to enable companies and financial institutions to bypass the prohibitive costs of supply chain assessments and to focus audits in areas that carry the highest risks. For governments it will enable better environmental policymaking and
improve public procurement, and help achieve commitments on sustainability and zero deforestation.
