About the role

Global Canopy, the data-driven organisation targeting the market forces destroying nature, is seeking a highly experienced, senior fundraising leader to lead their Development team, drive innovative approaches for fundraising excellence and contribute to overseeing our earned income growth.

This is an exciting opportunity to join an organisation that is experiencing transformative growth and is at the heart of global efforts to tackle the intertwined climate and nature crises. Over the last few years, Global Canopy’s income has grown significantly to more than £6 million.

The role will be responsible for taking a holistic view over all restricted and unrestricted income streams, including institutional, trusts and foundations and individual grants and donations, as well as a managing a select portfolio of the charity’s most important funders. The post will also play a key role in building on new opportunities for earned income from the charity’s data tools. The Director of Income will sit on the Senior Leadership team, contributing to future strategy and overall business planning.

To be successful in this role, these are the things that will matter the most:

  • Have strong strategic leadership skills, with experience of working at a senior/director level in a complex organisation within the international not-for-profit sector.
  • Have demonstrable success prospecting for, securing and stewarding major six and seven figure grants.
  • Exhibit demonstrable success leading engagement with and securing funding from institutional donors.
  • Have experience of securing funding from international sources.
  • Be confident in presenting and reporting on income generation to high level stakeholders including the board and Trustees.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build and articulate Global Canopy’s case for support in a persuasive and compelling way.

Responsibilities

  • Lead an ambitious income generation strategy for Global Canopy.
  • Oversee all Global Canopy income streams (projected at nearly £7 million for 2024/5), ensuring the right balance of restricted and unrestricted income.
  • Responsible for a select portfolio of major funders, growing and developing income.
  • Lead institutional fundraising across Global Canopy, ensuring high-level engagement to secure strategic, impactful opportunities.
  • Line management of key fundraising roles.
  • Manage and strategically grow Global Canopy’s support internationally, including the US and other new markets in which we operate such as Brazil.
  • Work with the programmes, communications and finance teams to ensure Global Canopy’s work is packaged and presented consistently in the most effective way to secure support.
  • Ensure a coordinated earned income strategy related to our market-leading data, working with relevant programmatic and finance team colleagues to maximise potential.
  • Work with the Development team and other Global Canopy teams to ensure efficient processes to manage prospect development, tracking contacts and pipelines and contract delivery.
  • Lead the Development team’s interaction with programmes and Executive Director to develop and refine funding concepts.
  • Participate in setting the future direction of Global Canopy as a member of the Leadership Team.
  • Represent Global Canopy and its work at high-level events and conferences to raise profile with current and potential donors, champions and strategic partners.
  • Report to the Trustee board on income and income projections.
  • Overall responsibility for fundraising regulatory compliance, best practice and related policies across the organisation.
