Indigenous leaders, experts and artists join forces for unique event during COP26

Glasgow, UK: Musicians, filmmakers, Indigenous leaders, artists and climate experts will come together to highlight the importance of the Amazon rainforest to the planet and the role of Indigenous peoples in its survival and future prosperity.

To be held at The New York Times Climate Hub in Glasgow and streamed live globally on Wednesday 10 November 2021 at 18:00 GMT, Raising the Roof is curated by Global Canopy, the not-for-profit targeting the market forces destroying nature.

The event will showcase the talent and artistry of Brazil and the Amazon featuring powerful images from photojournalist Victor Moriyama and music from DJ Eric Marky, Domenico Lancelotti, and Carlos Rennó and Nando Reis of the Song for the Amazon in partnership with Greenpeace Brazil and more than 30 Brazilian artists. Short films by Indigenous filmmakers including Equilibrium, The Breathing of the Xapiri – XAPIRI PË NË MARI and Oca Red: Living Beyond the End of the World will also be screened.

Central to the evening will be testimonies from female Indigenous leaders including Juma Xipaia from the Xingu Basin, Sônia Guajajara, Executive Coordinator of the Brazilian Articulation of Indigenous Peoples (ABIP) and former Brazil Presidential candidate, and internationally recognised filmmaker Takuma Kuikuro, as well as talks by climate experts.

The Amazon is the largest tropical forest in the world with over three billion years of history. It houses the greatest concentration of biodiversity on Earth and absorbs 5 per cent of global annual CO2 emissions. Yet, deforestation in the Amazon is at its highest level in a decade.
Scientists have announced a red alert for the Amazon Basin and recommended an immediate moratorium on deforestation in areas that are close to reaching the tipping point of no return.

Indigenous peoples in Brazil are highlighting the need to respect the biological and cultural diversity present in indigenous territories, for the sake of humanity itself. We urgently need to reforest not just territories, but also minds and hearts. Without us, there will be no solution to the climate crisis”.

Lideranças e artistas indígenas, músicos e especialistas unem esforços em evento do The New York Times Climate Hub durante a COP-26

Glasgow, Reino Unido: Músicos, lideranças e artistas indígenas e especialistas em mudanças climáticas reúnem-se para ressaltar a importância da floresta Amazônica e o papel e potência criativa dos povos indígenas para a sua sobrevivência e prosperidade.

Vozes pela Amazônia – Em Alto e Bom Som é um evento que faz parte do The New York Times Climate Hub, em Glasgow, e tem curadoria da Global Canopy.

O evento será palco do talento e da arte do Brasil e da Amazônia, e inclui: imagens e depoimento do fotojornalista Victor Moriyama; videoclipe da Canção para a Amazônia, de Carlos Rennó e Nando Reis, realizada em parceria com o Greenpeace Brasil e mais de 30 outros artistas brasileiros; discotecagem do DJ indígena Eric Marky, e show do Domenico Lancelotti e Ricardo Dias Gomes, que vão criar paisagens sonoras para a voz do mestre
Ibã Huni Kuin.

Um dos pontos altos da noite será os depoimentos de mulheres líderes indígenas como Juma Xipaia, da Bacia do Xingu, e Sônia Guajajara, Coordenadora Executiva da APIB – Articulação dos Povos Indígenas do Brasil.

A programação inclui ainda curtas dirigidos por cineastas indígenas, como Equilibrium, de Olinda Tupinambá, e Oca Red: A Vida Além do Fim do Mundo, de Takumã Kuikuro.

A Amazônia é a maior floresta tropical do mundo, apresentando a maior concentração de biodiversidade da Terra e absorve 5% das emissões anuais de CO2. Ainda assim, o índice de desmatamento do bioma atingiu o maior patamar em uma década. Recentemente, mais de 200 cientistas anunciaram um alerta vermelho para a Amazônia e recomendaram uma moratória imediata do desmatamento em áreas que estão próximas de atingir o ponto de inflexão – ou de não retorno.

“Essa é a maior delegação indígena brasileira na história da Conferência do Clima. Os povos indígenas no Brasil reforçam a necessidade de respeitarmos a diversidade biológica e cultural dos territórios indígenas, também pelo bem da própria humanidade. Precisamos urgentemente reflorestar não apenas territórios, mas também mentes e corações. Sem nós, não haverá solução para a crise climática”.
