Assessing the nature-related issues of investees’ clients as a Colombian investment management consortium

Case study / 22 Jan 2024

Grupo SURA case study on piloting the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures recommendations.

This case study is now also available in Spanish and Portuguese.

Investment management firm Grupo SURA, took part in Global Canopy’s Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) piloting programme prior to the launch of the TNFD Final Recommendations in September 2023.

The TNFD has developed a set of recommendations and guidance for organisations to identify, assess, manage, and – where appropriate – disclose, their evolving nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities. Its recommendations and guidance help organisations to integrate nature into decision-making, and ultimately support a shift in global financial flows away from nature-negative outcomes, toward nature-positive outcomes.

Supported by Frontierra and Global Canopy, Grupo SURA piloted the TNFD’s LEAP approach to identify and assess its indirect nature-related issues via investees’ clients. The pilot focused on applying the LEAP approach to assess Grupo SURA’s exposure to tropical deforestation through multiple sectors within its investment portfolio.

ENCORE is among the tools that Grupo SURA used to identify key environmental assets and ecosystem services in priority locations relevant to key investments in multiple potentially high impact sectors. Find out more about ENCORE and how it can support organisations undertaking the TNFD LEAP approach.

Grupo SURA also used Trase to map the geographic locations of where key agricultural commodities are sourced by companies in its investment portfolio.
