ENCORE Insights: Country Dashboard launches

10 Dec 2025

Global Canopy launches the ENCORE Insights: Country Dashboard – a new tool to support macroeconomic risk assessment for central banks, governments, environmental regulators and financial institutions, including insurers

The ENCORE Insights: Country Dashboard provides quantitative data that reveals how far the EU, EU countries and their most crucial economic sectors are potentially at financial risk from nature degradation. It enables central banks, governments and financial institutions to pinpoint how much of this risk originates at home compared with abroad.

Nature: the infrastructure that underpins EU economies

Nature is the hidden backbone of many EU countries’ most crucial economic engines. Our new data reveals how nature loss – both at home in the EU and abroad – could disrupt the EU economy to the tune of trillions of euros.

Knowing the size of this risk exposure, and in which economic sectors it’s most acute, is key to understanding how and where to regulate and invest – both at home and abroad – to build the EU’s financial resilience.

Dashboard data reveals the EU’s exposure to financial risk from nature degradation

Dashboard data shows that the health of the EU economy is significantly tied to the health of nature, both domestically and internationally.

  • €6.7 trillion of the EU’s economic production is highly exposed to financial risk from nature degradation in the EU. This equates to nearly half (49%) of the value contributed to the EU economy by domestic production.
  • The EU imports €408.5 billion of goods and services that depend highly on nature in countries outside the EU, representing a third (31%) of the EU’s total imports. Nature degradation in these countries can affect supply chains for production in the EU, as well as the standard of living of EU residents who consume these imports.
  • Taken together, this means €7.1 trillion of the EU’s economy – including both economic production and imports – is highly exposed to financial risk from nature degradation at home and abroad.

Explore the ENCORE Insights: Country Dashboard

The ENCORE Insights: Country Dashboard is a free online tool that provides a first step in macroeconomic risk assessment, spotlighting how EU countries may suffer financially from nature degradation. It pinpoints the economic engines in each country that are the most exposed, and shows the extent of exposure originating at home compared with abroad.

Dashboard data can support evidence-based decisions about financial regulation and supervision, public spending and investments – at home in the EU and abroad – to reduce exposure to financial risk from nature degradation, and build financial resilience in the EU.

ENCORE Insights: Country Dashboard

For the EU as a whole, the dashboard provides data about:

  • domestic production that’s highly exposed to financial risk from nature degradation in the EU
  • economic value added by imports that’s highly exposed to financial risk from nature degradation abroad
  • overarching value of its economy that’s highly exposed to financial risk from nature degradation through both domestic production and imports.

For each EU country, the dashboard provides data about:

  • domestic production that’s highly exposed to financial risk from nature degradation within the country
  • economic value added by imports that’s highly exposed to financial risk from nature degradation abroad
  • overarching value of its economy that’s highly exposed to financial risk from nature degradation through domestic production and imports
  • value of its key sectors that’s highly exposed to financial risk from nature degradation.

The health of the EU economy is tied to the health of nature – at home and abroad

Central banks, environmental regulators and governments can take action at home and abroad to build the EU’s economic resilience. They can regulate and update supervision to reduce the flow of finance into activity that damages nature and increase the flow of finance into activity that increases the resilience of nature, and through this strengthen a key piece of infrastructure that underpins their economies.

Stay tuned for data updates

New data will be added to the ENCORE Insights: Country Dashboard in 2026 and 2027. These additions will quantify the EU’s and EU countries’ exposure to financial risk from nature degradation, at home and abroad, across socio-economic indicators including jobs, wages and exports. It will also provide detail about the specific natural processes – ecosystem services – on which the EU, its countries and their key economic engines depend most acutely.

The ENCORE Insights: Country Dashboard is being developed by Global Canopy as part of the Nature-3B consortium. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement No.101182455. ENCORE Insights is a project of ENCORE.
